The idea of standing in from of Him is illustrated using the Mashal of standing in front of the Rebbe.

This explains (also) the Possuk we say at the outset אדנ”י שפתי תפתח we need Him to give us words because of our Bittul,
So SHmone Esrei is our Bittul compounded by His presence allowing us to experience Him, Bittul BiMtzius.
