It is uncertain who wrote Adon Olom and when it was written. What is certain is that it does not appear in the Siddur until relatively recently. (It appears in the Shela but not in the RaMaK or the Arizal). It has four parts (and the order is strange: 1) His Kingship, 2) His abstraction, 3) His providing me with all, 4) My entrusting Him. There is a longer version (in the Siddur Rab Shabsi Sofer) with six or seven parts, including a mention of the ten S’firos. Why we say the shorter version. Adon Olom is a meditation we do to think of God and how it helps us.
