Considering that Tefilla is from the bottom up, it requires work on the part of the person.
The work is בירור המדות (refining one’s LIMITED faculties [as the word Middos connotes]) and this makes the person a vessel to tap into the Supernal Middos (which are the Sfiros or Middos [connoting limitation in Elokus] of Atzilus).
Practically and actionably, this is achieved by working on the Livushim (thought speech and deed), because the Middos by themselves are hard to control and master.
